Tim Covino—Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences

I am currently a Ph.D. student at Montana State University working with Dr. Brian McGlynn.  My research focuses on the flux of water and nutrients (nitrogen, carbon, phosphorous) from mountain watersheds.  In this work I am investigating how network complexity (stream networks and interspersion of lakes) impacts the export of water and nutrients from the watershed, and how stream and landscape characteristics relate to in-stream nutrient dynamics.  Lately much of my work has focused on how variable stream gains and losses (from and to groundwater) impact solute transport.

My masters research focused on how stream-groundwater interactions impact hydrologic response and stream water chemistry in mountain watersheds.  I am interested in the spatial and temporal variability in mountain front groundwater recharge, and valley bottom groundwater discharge and the role these processes play in determining the timing, quantity, and geochemistry of water delivered to the valley bottom from alpine watersheds.
